Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to build a guitar?
Group lessons are designed so that a typical guitar can be completed within the allocated 12 full days. One-to-one masterclasses and the evening class are ideal for students who want to be a little more ambitious with their project. Typically, 70-80 hours is sufficient, but it is not uncommon for some guitars to take longer.
Do I need to bring any tools or wood for my lesson?
You don't need to bring anything with you. Group lesson fees cover the cost of materials and all tools are provided.
Do I need any woodworking or guitar playing experience?
Although it is helpful to have some knowledge of working with wood, lessons are delivered assuming that you have no previous experience. Many students are keen guitarists, but this is certainly not a requirement for building a world class instrument!
What will I get at the end of the course?
All students work at a different pace, but we hope that you will finish the 12 day group course with a beautiful handmade instrument that you can enjoy playing for many years to come. We cannot make a guarantee to you (all students work at a different rate) that you will finish, but tutor Alex will do everything he can to assist anyone falling behind.
What hours are the lessons?
Unless otherwise specified, group lessons run from 10am until 6pm. This includes a break for lunch at 1-2pm. One-to-one lessons are flexible and can be booked between 10-5:30pm most Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Evening classes run on Wednesday evenings 6-9pm.
Where do the guitar making lessons take place?
All guitar making lessons take place at the Alex Bishop Guitars workshop:
Is there parking?
Yes, there is ample car parking for students arriving by car.
When do I need to book by?
Confirmation and a deposit is required at least 2 weeks before group courses begin. One-to-one and evening class lessons can normally be arranged with as little as 24 hours notice, pending availability.
When do I need to pay you?
Payment for lessons is required at the point of booking.
Enrolement on group lessons is confirmed by payment of a non-refundable deposit of £500 at least two weeks prior to the course start date. The deposit is required so the tutor can obtain materials for the course, including wood and hardware (tuners, strings etc) for your guitar.
What is your cancellation policy?
I understand that plans change and you may need to reschedule your lesson. This is no problem, provided you can give 24 hours' notice. Deposits for group lessons are non-refundable.
Do you provide any warranty on the guitar I have made?
I am unable to provide any warranty for guitars built in the group lessons, however I will always provide as much support as possible to students who have built guitars on these courses. Students are welcome to follow up their group lessons with a one-to-one lesson so they can make further improvements to their instrument if they wish.
Guitars built in the one-to-one masterclasses are covered by a limited lifetime warranty.
